How to choose your necklace length

Or it gets lost somewhere under your collar. Length decides where the piece falls on your body, which neckline it flatters, and whether it visually elongates your neck or shortens it.
Its the number-one reason a necklace ends up unworn in a drawer. This guide covers everything you need so it wont happen again: the centimeter standards, how to read your own silhouette, which length pairs with which neckline, how to layer without looking messy, and how to choose by occasion. In short: the universal length that works on almost any figure and any neckline is 45 cm (the "princess" type) it falls 23 cm below the collarbones. Petite or have a short neck? Go down toward 40 cm, or much lower, toward 5060 cm, to elongate. When in doubt, 45 cm is the answer.

Jewelers have used a set of names for necklace lengths for over a century choker, princess, opera, and so on. The terms sound elegant, but in practice the only thing that matters is how many centimeters the necklace fastens at and where that number lands on your body. Heres the full map.

A few notes you wont find on the product tag. These numbers assume an average neck size (around 33238 cm circumference). If your neck is fuller, a 40 cm necklace that looked like a relaxed choker on the mannequin will sit higher and tighter on you go up one size. And one more thing: the pendant "steals" length. A heavy medallion pulls the necklace down and makes it look 12 cm longer than the label says.
Most of our necklaces come with an extender an extra chain at the clasp with several adjustment rings. Fasten the clasp in any of them: closer means shorter; the last ring gives you the maximum length. This way, the same necklace covers multiple lengths from the table. How to measure your length at home.
Take a string, place it around your neck exactly where you want the necklace to fall, pinch the point with your fingers, then lay that piece against a tape measure. The number you get is the length you need. It takes under a minute and its more precise than any guesswork.
The method in detail, because small mistakes here throw off the whole choice. Stand in front of a mirror wearing the top you wear most often not bare, because a collar completely changes where you want the piece to fall. Put the string around your neck and let it hang. Move it up and down until you find the point you like: right below the neck, at the collarbones, mid-chest. When youve found it, hold the two ends in front with your fingers at the lowest point of the loop. Take the string off without losing your grip and measure it. This is the total length, clasp included.
If you want to compare with something you already own, its even simpler: take a necklace you love the way it sits, undo it, lay it flat on the table and measure from one end of the clasp to the other. Thats your personal reference write it down and use it for every order.
Measure in the evening, not in the morning, and standing up your relaxed end-of-day posture reflects how youll actually wear the necklace. And if youre between two numbers, always choose the longer option: a necklace thats too long can easily be shortened by any jeweler; one thats too short cant be saved.
Length by figure.
This is where it all really matters. The same 45 cm looks completely different on a woman whos 1.58 m versus one whos 1.78 m. The principle is just one, and its worth remembering: vertical lines elongate; horizontal lines widen. Everything else is application.
Petite figure (under 1.60 m)
Long necklaces overwhelm you. An 80 cm sautoir on a small frame chops the body and shortens you visually. Stay in the 3545 cm range, and if you want something longer, stop at 5070 cm and choose a fine chain with a small pendant. The rule: the necklace shouldnt go past the bust line.
Tall figure (over 1.73 m)
You have play space others dont. Medium to long lengths 50, 60, 70 cm fall beautifully and balance the vertical. A short 40 cm necklace can look small, so add 23 cm in your mind to any standard reference. Long sautoirs are practically made for you.
Fuller figure and generous bust
The key is to avoid lengths that stop right at the fullest point of the bust thats where the necklace draws attention exactly where you dont want it. Skip that zone: either stay high, at 4045 cm, above the bust, or drop clearly below it, at 6070 cm, where the longer line elongates. A V-shaped necklace that dips to a point is the most flattering.
Short neck vs. long neck
If you have a short neck, the choker is the classic trap it cuts your neck and makes it look even shorter. Choose lengths from 45 cm up that leave the neck free and pull the eye downward. If, on the contrary, you have a long, slim neck, youre lucky: chokers and 3540 cm lengths look superb and fill the space elegantly.
Face and neck shape.
The necklace sits right under your face, so it becomes a frame for it. The idea is to counterbalance the shape, not repeat it: a round shape benefits from sharper lines; an angular one softens with curves.
Round face: long necklaces and those with a V-drop pendant are your allies they add the vertical thats missing and visually slim. Avoid the round choker. Aim for 50 cm and longer.
Oval face: you have the most balanced shape and can wear almost anything, from choker to sautoir. The only concern is proportion with your height.
Square face or pronounced jaw: curves soften angles. Round necklaces, beaded pieces, organic shapes at 4550 cm, velvet the face line. Steer clear of very geometric pieces worn short.
Heart-shaped face: you want volume lower to balance. Necklaces that widen toward the base, statement styles or drops at a medium length, add weight exactly where needed.
Length by neckline.
If you remember one thing from the entire guide, make it this: the necklace and the neckline should complement, not compete. Either follow the necklines line, or contradict it deliberately what you dont want is for the two to collide a few millimeters apart.
Wear a necklace either above the neckline line, or exactly following its shape. A necklace that ends right on the edge of the neckline, overlapping it, almost always looks bad.
Round neckline / crew neck
It calls for either a short necklace that sits above the fabric (352 cm), or a clearly longer one that drops over it (55 cm+). A 45 cm princess stopping right on the T-shirts edge is the zone to avoid.
V-neck
The most forgiving neckline. Choose a necklace that echoes the V angle a pendant that dips to a point, at 455 cm, follows the line perfectly. Its the combo that flatters almost everyone.
Boat neckline / boat neck
The wide, horizontal line calls for contrast. A short necklace, choker or collar (352 cm), sits nicely above it and breaks up the monotony. Medium lengths get lost under the shoulder line.
High neckline
You have little free surface up top, so go long. Necklaces of 5570 cm, perhaps doubled, fall over the fabric and create interest where it would otherwise be empty. A choker feels cramped next to a high collar here.
Bare shoulders / off-shoulder
Neck and neckline are completely bare its the perfect stage for a choker or collar (350 cm) that elegantly fills the empty space. Long lengths get lost on bare skin.
High neck / turtleneck
The fabric comes up high, so the necklace should go over it, long. The 60 0 cm zone is ideal a sautoir that hangs over knitwear looks sophisticated, a classic fallwinter combination. You can double a long necklace into two rows.
Collared shirt

Layering: how to combine more.
Layering wearing multiple necklaces at once has become one of the most-loved ways to personalize a look. Done well, it looks effortless and expensive at the same time. Done poorly, it looks like your chains tangled in a rush. The difference comes down to two simple rules.
Rule 1: leave space between rows. Each necklace should be at least 4 cm longer than the one above so the chains stay separate. If theyre too close, they touch, twist, and turn into a single tangled mass.
Rule 2: vary, but keep a common thread. Mix lengths, but connect the pieces through a common element all in the same metal color, or a coherent style. Length contrast gives dynamism; material consistency gives elegance.
Combinations that always work
The classic trio that never fails: 40 + 45 + 55 cm. A choker on top, a princess in the middle, a pendant necklace at the bottom. Three clear levels, nicely spaced.
Minimalist daytime duo: 42 + 50 cm, a fine chain and one with a small pendant. Discreet, office-friendly.
Evening volume look: 45 + 60 + 80 cm, with the longest, most statement piece at the bottom to anchor the whole set.
Start layering with the shortest piece and add downward. Its easier to build the set from top to bottom, and if at some point it feels too busy, remove the last piece you added that usually fixes it.
Choosing by occasion.
Context changes everything. The same woman needs different necklaces for a day at the office and for an evening wedding, and length is the first thing that shifts the register from "discreet" to "remarkable".
Office
